Jose and Repischak squared up toe to toe but Rivas took the winners side 5-1 awaiting an opponent. It was a tough match between Paul and Tom but Piehl remained hot, edging out Repischak 4-3. Runnels Runs over the Competition in the McDermott Midwest Cup
Eighteen of the Midwest’s diehard big table players showed up for the Open event at the McDermott Midwest Cup in Waukegan, Illinois and master player Ike Runnels went home the champion. Runnels, of Kankakee, Illinois battled his way through a few close matches and came out on top, just above the infamous Jonathan Demet of Racine, Wisconsin.

Dean Durge and Jon Giles
It’s 1am and the rail birds stuck around for the excitement. Both players stay focused in this last match without thought of the long day or drive home. What drives these two knowing they have to be up in the morning for work? It could be some of the things that got us excited about pool in the first place like Competition, the lust for that shiny 1st place trophy, recognition at your home room, playing in front of the rail birds, having your picture published, giving a good player a tough match, getting the chance to beat a fellow good player and knowing if you don’t win you will learn something. It could be just being around so many pool players to relate to or the extra cash… Maybe it’s because they have played some great matches all day and are high on the feeling of practicing hard and playing well as a result. I’m sure you can think of some more good reasons yourself because I know you all have been excited about pool at sometime. If you haven’t yet, you will!
Boomers Billiards lends us a nice venue for the BCW’s McDermott Amateur Nine Ball Tournament and the play gets going around 1pm. Meanwhile on the loser side in the bottom bracket Jon Giles of Milwaukee gets rolling with four consecutive wins in a row. This puts him in a match against Dave Leverenz for third place and a spot in the semi final match. Dave Leverenz and Jon Giles are giving the rail birds their monies worth by putting on quite an exhibition and both making it to double hill. Jon Giles sinks the nine in suspenseful double hill match and advances in the tournament. This leaves Dave Leverenz in a 4th place finish. Giles continues his hot streak with a semi final match win against Clay Johnson of Oak Creek by the score of 6-3. This leaves Clay in a 3rd place finish and moves Giles on to play Dean Durge for the BCW Amateur title.

Francis Rave Sr. didn’t miss a beat against Robert, “NEW YORK” Treffeisen and gained another win by the score of 7 to 4. Ron Purtee The Warrior stayed in stroke on the practice table & it sure helped him with a tremendous win stopping, “the man on a path” Francis Rave Sr. by the score of 8 to 0. Wow! Congratulations to both Robert Treffeisen & Francis Rave Sr. for two great finishes.
The battle has begun & one of these players has come with a sharper ax. The question is which tree will fall first? Ron, “THE WARRIOR” Purtee off steady with a 5 to 2 lead but Chris Gitzlaff shows heart with two great game saves to get to 4 and a chance to take it down in an even race to 3. Neither player lets up & yet once again a nerve testing HILL HILL match. Chris Gitzlaff breaks pockets a ball, but no shot! This surely is a game of knowledge and wits & proves to test pool players yet again. Ron, “THE WARRIOR” Purtee wins a safety battle but an unforced error leaves Chris an opportunity to finish him off and like a true capitalist Chris Seizes the opportunity and walks away as the Outbreak Billiards B.C.W. Amateur tour stop Champion.
Daiber Dominates!
Twenty-two of the best pool players around warmed up their cars and took a drive down I-94.The exit was West College Avenue, then a turn North on 27th Street and the hearts start pumping.Everyone of these players invasion themselves on the hill making the nine ball in the final match and taking home a piece of the $1,230.00 pie, in addition to the title of the B.C.W. Romines Open Nine Ball Tour Stop Champion!
Romines High Pockets, biggest pool hall in the Midwest!Weekly handicapped nine ball tournament, 7pm sharp, Saturdays, $22.00 entry
On the winner side, four players bear down looking to lock up 3rd Place and put themselves one more win away from taking the hot seat.Claudio “Claw” Parrone and Ron “The Warrior” Purtee exchange blows in a grueling match to nine games. The “Warrior” takes advantage of some rules and makes a great comeback to win by the score of 9-7.Well known player and veteran to pool tournaments nationwide, Willie Munson is matched against Matt “Action Man” Daiber. The Action Man has quickly become a skilled player and has shown us all, he belongs competing in the Open Tournaments.Good pool is what I think of as I watch these two players battle it out.Someone had to get to nine first and with a skillful eye Matt “Action Man” Daiber takes it down 9-5.
Get the hoses ready, because the loser side is heating up!Jon Giles, a Junior Player out of Milwaukee Wisconsin (who shows a promising future in the B.C.W.) is playing Bob “New York” Treffeisen, of Milwaukee. On the next, table two local veterans of the game, Tom Radowitz and Gary Johnson square off.All four contenders fight for the cash and a chance to continue on in the B.C.W. Romines Open Nine Ball Tour Stop.
If you like pool you need to be here because this is exciting!Ron “The Warrior” Purtee combats Matt “Action Man” Daiber for the hot seat!Three to Three and the “Action Man” has control of the game.To close to bet on if you ask me, but I’ve never been much of a gambler.Lol.Matt “Action Man” Daiber beats “The Warrior” 9-6.What a match!
Everyone is in the money but no one’s acting funny.Serious is the word I would use to describe the energy amongst these talented players.Claudio “Claw” Parrone, of Kenosha Wisconsin, meets Bob “New York” Treffeisen and Willie Munson deals with Tom Radowitz, of Milwaukee. All four players would like to see 5th/ 6th place in the dust and another chance to rack and bust.
It’s been a long day and Willie Munson and Bob Treffeisen played well to get to 4th position but neither is satisfied.Willie stays steady and knocks off Bob Treffeisen 7-2.Willie gets off to a quick lead against Ron and doesn’t let up.Willie defeats Ron “The Warrior” Purtee 7-2.Congrats to Ron for a notable 3rd Place finish!
Two players remain and I have never been more curious. All square 6-6.Matt “Action Man” Daiber has complete control and over cuts the seven in attempt for the side pocket.Wow, a great safe Willie plays.7-6 Willie breaks and nothing spreads, Willie remarks, “I racked bad”.It’s been a long day but I had to laugh. The long day is wearing both competitors and it shows. The score is 8-6 Willie.Willie misses the one ball and Matt clears the table. The score is 8-7 Willie.Matt plays a brilliant safe from down table and forces Willie to kick two Rails.Willie just misses the kick! The moment of truth, Hill to Hill andMatt “Action Man” Daiber is breaking.“Action Man” takes it down and outlasts known champion Willie Munson.
Treffeisen Triumphs!
Eleven diehards sacrificed a day in sun to maneuver around the newly clothed nine foot Olhausen professional tables at Master Z’s Cue Club in Waukesha Wisconsin. I’m excited about the new website www.bcwpool.com and the future of this terrific pool tour right here in Wisconsin. On the winners side Bob Treffeisen A.K.A. “New York” is playing well and is a real threat to this tour. He defeats John Conrath 8-2. John is recovering from a major surgery and is looking well! Good to see you playing John. “New York” just nips Tim Moriarty and stays on the winner side by beating John “Ribeye” Ribbich 8-4. In the top bracket Tony Chirchirillo is cooking up with wins over Paul Repischak of Waukesha and Weldon Nelson of Madison. Proceeding Tony will now face “New York” for the hot seat.
On the loser side four men are left and all fight to place. In the bottom bracket, young gun Jose Rivas Jr. matches up against John “Ribeye” Ribbich. In the top half, Young gun John Giles shoots against Weldon Nelson of Madison. Any man can win! “Ribeye” wins against young gun Jose Rivas Jr. 8-2. I know we will see more of Jose Rivas Jr. in the future. John Giles wins over Weldon Nelson 7-2 and now battles the “Ribeye”. Blow for blow each tenaciously jabbing away at each other. Ribeye won the McDermott Cue ( www.mcdermottcue.com ) with the new G-Core shaft in the raffle, started playing with it and says, “I’m going to win this tournament with this cue”. Well good luck sir. I guess he was serious because he is fighting hard against John Giles and both players now need one game apiece. Young gun John Giles gets it done and moves on. Nice tournament and a well done 4th place finish for John Ribbich.
For a shot at Tony Chirchirillo young gun John Giles tests his skill against Bob “New York” Treffeisen. Bob is spotting the kid a game to 8. First rack “New York” is long and straight on the six, he misses, but it spits into the next pocket and he takes advantage of his good fortune by clearing the table. The score is one to zero. John has ball and hand (ball in hand; can place cue ball anywhere on the table) on the four and an open table. The score is one to one. The young gun has worked hard on his game, hung around some great players such as, Willie Munson, Greg Matske, and Tommy Pauloske. Well, it shows. 3-1 young gun, 4-1 young gun, Bob is long, the one is in the middle of the short rail down table, it double kisses and leaves John Giles a shot. Young gun shoots the four too fast and jars it. Too much draw (draw; backspin) on the cue ball leaves “New York” with a tricky cut on the nine and it doesn’t find the hole. The score is 5-1 Young Gun. Giles misses the five in the side. New York seizes the opportunity and strings two racks together. The score is 5-3 young gun, 5-4 young gun. “New York” is at his tail and gaining momentum. Don’t let up now! The score is 6-5 and the young gun needs one game to clench it. All square 6-6, “New York” is within two and breaking. On the snap the nine ball found a pocket and the score is 7-6. Wow, Bob Treffeisen drops four balls on the snap and is shooting at the two with an open table. It doesn’t drop. Giles is left tough and makes an attempt on a safe but does not get there. “New York” clears the table and stays alive. Great 3rd place finish for Junior “A” player John Giles.
Showdown! Tony C has got the hot seat and Bob T’s got chance a cue stick and two feet. “New York” is spotting Tony Chirchirillo two games in a race to eight and has to beat him twice if he wants this title. It is tough being the king of the hill (king of the hill; winner if winner side bracket) waiting for someone warmed up from running, to knock you down. All Tony can do is hope he gets a chance to find that sweet old rhythm and groove. Bob takes down the first match 6-3 and gives himself another chance to win the title and become an amateur tour stop champion. Bob Treffeisen gets moving and keeps on grooving, clenching the Master Z‘s B.C.W. Amateur Nine Ball Tour Stop by the final score of 7-1. Terrific tournament to Tony Chirchirillo with a 2nd place finish and congratulations to Bob “New York” Treffeisen, our tournament stop champion!
Carter and Munson Show Top Notch Pool!
Three players left, all looking for a victory to add to their resume.Jeff Carter, two time world eight ball runner up, stays smooth, taking the hot seat with victories over Dave Adrian of Racine 7-4, Bob Miller of Madison 7-6, “Young Gun” Jon Giles 7-3, and Willie Munson 7-4.Dave Coles Jr. bounces back strong on the loser side after a tough match with Jonathan Demet of Racine by beating Duncan Kaufman 5-0, Jonathan Demet 5-1, and Bob Miller 5-1.
Willie Munson and Dave Coles Jr. square off in a tight match all the way up to the end. Dave Coles Jr. has control of the final game but an unforced error leaves Willie with ball and hand on the nine ball. Congratulations to Dave Coles Jr. for a nice 3rd place finish paying $165.00.
The end is near and two players are still here.Willie Munson needs to beat Jeff Carter twice to take home the 1st place trophy and purse.Willie is off to a good start with a 4-0 lead over Jeff. Willie has a 6-0 lead and his presence feels like thunder shaking the earth you stand on. I really got to give it up to this man. Willie is a young 71 and can run out for days. Willie wins the first match 7-1.
First one to five games for all the marbles. Jeff has control of the first game but an unforced error puts Jeff In position to scratch.Jeff wins the second, third, and fourth game and the score is now 3-1. A flawless game from the break makes it 4-1.The middle of the sixth rack Willie finally gets a chance to shoot. He has to kick at it but it’s a shot. Jeff quickly regains control and sails through the final match with a win 5-1.

Radowitz Rattles Rivals
Happy Halloween is over and I hope an extra hour of sleep helps the fifteen players competing in the B.C.W. Amateur Tours third stop this season. As expected the number of players showing up is getting better and better! Fifteen of Wisconsin’s best amateurs journey to 701 East Washington Rd. Madison, Wisconsin, to test their skills and eagle sharp eye sight. I can’t believe how many players showed knowing they where to miss the Packer Viking game and the last game of the World Series. I put my money on the fields getting stronger once the word is out that the entry fee is now only $40 dollars and $25 for juniors and woman.
It’s down to three and the tension is strong.Tom “T.R.” Radawitz took the hot seat with wins over, 14 year old Tyler Styer 6-1, Haven Ben 6-4, Young Gun Jon Giles 6-5, and Francis Rave Sr. 6-5.On the loser side it’s getting interesting as Young Gun Jon Giles goes toe to toe with Francis Rave Sr.That shiny mirrored finished plaque is in the grasps of both these players. The question is which player has longer arms? Both competitors are doing their best and it comes down to who gets control of the game. The score is 2-1 Young Gun.I had to step off to adjust the juke box and by the time I got back it was hill to hill.Wow!Francis Rave Sr. plays a nice safe on the three ball.Jon attempts a three rail kick which he just misses.Jon is on two fouls and instead of Francis playing a safe he took a shot at the 9 ball.It bobbles and spits out.Francis has a shot on the four, the five goes down but the six does not go.Now Francis is long and plays for a safe that requires some speed control.Jon scratches and gives Francis ball in hand.Francis scratches on the seven, Oh no!Jon cleans up the last two for the W. Wow!Big congrats to Francis Rave Sr. on his second third place finish this season.
The final match pits Tom “T.R.” Radowitz verse the Young Gun Jon Giles.Young Gun has two win twice. Good Luck to both players.Jon shows a great stroke first game to take the lead 1-0.Jon misses a cut on the nine and scratches. All tied 1-1. Tom grabs the lead with a nice out 2-1.Tom “T.R.” Radowitz is looking sharp shooting those balls right off the table Gaining a 5-3 lead over the tenacious Young Gun.Mr. T.R. has a shot on the 7 but a scratch in the side gives Giles a chance and a game win that could easily sway the momentum. Tom just over cuts the 5 leaving Giles a chance.Young Gun comes with some great shots to get on the hill.Mr. T.R. has ball and hand on the six but it’s tough.Tom left himself with a shot on the eight and that is all he could do from the position he was in.Wow a great shot on the eight ball and shape on the nine clenches victory for Tom T.R. Radowitz.Congrats to both Jon Giles and Tom Radowitz for a well played tournament.
Jason Jicks Jumps Ahead of The Competition
-Read about it in Inside Pool -
Classic Billiards brought out 18 of Wisconsin’s top amateurs for the $300 added BCW nine ball amateur.
Spectators are looking as the winner side is cooking. On the top half of the winners bracket Paul Scott a top ranked amateur is playing well.Wins over Ken Steinley 8-2, Chris Gitzlaff 8-5, and Terry Nixon 8-6 has put Paul in position to play for the hot seat.On the bottom half “A” player Jason Jick shows some knowledge by defeating Junior Player Kevin Ruiz 7-2, “A” player Marko Stanosevic 7-5, and “A” player Tom Radowitz 7-1.
Jason is tough but Paul thinks it might not be enough, as the two square off for the hot seat. The score is 5-3 Paul and he has an open shot on the one ball after the break.Long and straight on the seven and it calls for a draw stroke. Not enough spin leaves him with a kick that doesn’t pan out.The score is 5-4 Paul.Jason is on the hill and throws down a safety break. Paul fights his way to the hill.Jason has control of the game and gets through it to take king of the hill honors.
Over on the loser side of things Tom Radowitz made his way through by beating Dan Hau 6-3 and Marko Stanosevic 6-1 and now faces Paul Scott for a chance at the finals.Tom gets off to a good start winning the first game.Tom keeps up the lead with some wise shots making the score 3-1.Both players need two games but Radowitz has control and does not let go playing steady and making it to the hill.A failed safe gives Paul Scott a chance and he makes a great safe.Tom makes a good hit on the one with a two rail kick but Paul maintains control of the game.A failed attempt at the four nine combo leaves Tom an open shot on the four ball.A nice run out by Tom moves him forward and leaves Paul with a 3rd place finish.Nice tournament Paul Scott.
The chalk flies as Tom Radowitz breaks in the second rack after winning the first game of the final match against Jason Jicks.Tom goes for a long straight back on the six and leaves Jason an easy three ball out for the taking. The match is one all. After a few exchanged blows Jason takes the lead by the score of 4-2. Tom keeps fighting staying within two games of Jason after a beautifully executed combination on the nine.Fast and loose is what comes to mind as I watch Jason speed through this rack making his way to the hill first. The score is 6-3 Jason. The five, six, and seven balls are tied up and I am curious as to how these players will handle it.Jason has ball and hand on the three and goes right into the cluster but leaves no shot on the five.A failed kick attempt leaves Tom with ball and hand on the six.Tom has complete control of this rack and is still in the match. The score is 6-4.Jason takes ball and hand on the one with a chance to get it all done.Bad speed on the six leaves him half way home and a miss on the seven gives Tom another win and keeps him in the game. The score is 6-5 Jason.Jason takes it down by the score 7-5.
